Developmental issues are issues that develop in humans at a very early age, before their second birthday. It usually occurs through genetic transfer.
These are the issues that include delays in a child's development, be it physical or mental. It includes a delay in the growth of a person, cognitive thinking, large hands, small legs, and many more problems. These issues require instant treatment and do not get cured on their own or at home. As you've probably heard:
“Strength lies in differences, not in similarities.” - Anonymous
Therefore, every individual with these issues shouldn't be looked down upon but rather appreciated for being able to live through their challenging life.
Types of Developmental Issues
There are four types of developmental issues which are-
Nervous System Disabilities
A small class of medical infections leads to serious damage to the nervous system, which consequently makes the individual mentally sick.
Sensory-Related Disabilities
The failure of the sense organs to work properly leads to sensory-related disabilities, which mainly include the loss of vision or hearing.
Metabolic Disabilities
When unwanted chemical reactions take place in the body and produce adverse chemical products, it can cause metabolic disabilities. E.g. Diabetes, liver cancer, heart disease etc.
Degenerative Disorders
Degenerative diseases are those in which the function or structure of the afflicted tissues or organs deteriorates over time.
Causes of Developmental Disorders
Excessive alcohol consumption by the parent.
Stress, trauma, or premature birth by the mother causes developmental issues to develop in infants.
Consumption of drugs during pregnancy.
Excessive work during the mother's rest phase while pregnant leads to the development of one or more negative traits in the child.
Poor nutrition of the mother during pregnancy harms the child.
Other Causes of Developmental Issues after Birth
Autism- Also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD) is a condition in which the child has communication and behaviour problems because of childhood trauma or a triggering incident.
Metabolic disorders after birth like phenylketonuria.
Traumatic brain injury leads to serious mental health problems.
Degenerative disorders, as mentioned above, like Rett Syndrome.
Down Syndrome or fragile X Syndrome indicates genetic mental retardation.
Muscular Dystrophy is a disorder that causes a continuous loss of muscle tissue and muscle weakness.
Cerebral palsy is a disorder of the brain and nervous system.
Effects of Developmental Issues
The individual could develop social anxiety which can take a lot of time to cope with.
Children can develop depression and be forced to take medications that may aggravate their already complicated situation.
They also begin to experience additional stress and are unable to focus on the task at hand, whether it is studies, co-curricular activities, or sports activities.
They begin to have difficulty adjusting to people because they are constantly judged, regardless of their positive mental presence in the environment.
They begin to doubt themselves and lose confidence, resulting in serious trauma that may not be cured for the rest of their lives.
They also lose abilities as they age.
Treatment of Developmental Issues
There is no proven treatment for developmental issues, but they can be remedied to some extent by doing the following:
Physical therapy- Talking to someone about your problems and getting advice on them may help the person forget about the problems and accept themselves fully.
Make sure your child is in the company of people who appreciate them rather than those who look down on them.
Pay attention to your child's problems and don't dismiss them. Make an effort to solve their problems. It enhances their love and trust for you.
Therefore, not everyone has the fortitude and stamina to endure developmental issues. Therefore, if you see someone going through it, please refrain from saying or doing anything that could harm them, whether physically or psychologically.
