What Are Self-Concept, Self-Esteem, and Self-Efficacy?

Self-Concept is how a person thinks about themselves and how they perceive themselves as a person.


Self-Esteem is a judgment and evaluation we make about ourselves. This judgment may be negative or positive.


Self-Efficacy is a judgment that people make about their ability to perform a task to achieve their goals.

How To Improve Self-Concept, Self-Esteem, and Self-Efficacy?

Use Positive Affirmations

The idea is to fill your mind with positive thoughts until you start to believe in them. For example: Try changing the vague statement "I am going to be successful" to something more manageable, like “I will persevere until I succeed".


Identify What You Are Good At

Everyone has something they are good at. So it's important to identify the areas in which a person can succeed. Find opportunities in everything you do to boost yourself.


Learn to Accept Failures

It is very important to accept your failures to realize your full potential. Failures are part of your life and it is necessary to accept them and move on.


Don't Criticize Yourself

Don't criticize yourself when you are already feeling down. We should combat this feeling with self-compassion. Instead, look for areas where there is scope for improvement.


Remind Yourself of Your Real Worth

Don't restrict yourself to a certain area; rather, explore everything around you. And if in case you feel rejected or disappointed, remind yourself of your real worth. That there is more to learn something everyday to boost your self-concept, self-esteem or self-efficacy.



Difference between Self-Concept, Self-Esteem, Self-Efficacy
  • Self-concept is an individual's overall perception about him/herself. "Who am I?”

  • Self-esteem talks about how much a person values him/her. “How much I like myself?”

  • Self-efficacy tells us about how much an individual is confident that they will be able to carry out the task successfully. “Should I believe in my capabilities"?

  • Self-concept is developed through interaction with others, personal experiences.

  • Self-esteem is influenced through biological and environmental factors including social interaction with others.

  • Self-efficacy is influenced by experiences; the act of mastery of a task is an important aspect of self-efficacy.

  • Self-concept of an individual can be positive or negative.

  • Self-esteem of an individual can be positive or negative.

  • But self-efficacy, an ability of an individual to a task, cannot be positive or negative.


Importance of Self-Concept, Self-Esteem, Self-Efficacy

Self-Concept

It plays an important part in our overall wellness. It affects the way we look at our body, and how we interact with others, and it even influences how we make decisions. Self-concepts can be changed during one's lifetime.


It is like a mental picture of who you think you are as a person. A person's self-concept helps them identify who they think they are and how they fit in this world. Self-concept is important because every individual wants to know themselves and feel as though they belong.


Self-Esteem

Self-esteem talks about how much a person values themselves and what their likes, and dislikes are. Self-esteem is influenced by both internal and external factors.


Internally, it is largely how we feel about ourselves, compare ourselves to others, and how others respond to us. Externally it is influenced by people around us, how they see us and what their feedback is.


Self-esteem is important to achieving our goals. It helps us to recognize our strengths and weaknesses and helps us to rectify our mistakes. It affects our thoughts; it also affects our self-confidence and the belief in our abilities. Having good self-esteem is very important for developing healthy relationships with others.


Self-Efficacy

It means a person's belief in their ability to carry out a task successfully. Self-efficacy can greatly impact how people think, behave, and motivate themselves. A strong sense of efficacy enhances human accomplishment and personal well-being in many ways.


People who have high self-efficacy see challenging tasks as ones that can be mastered, rather than as threats to be avoided. They set themselves challenging goals and maintain a strong commitment. Self-efficacy is very useful to boost student achievement, as a person can make an effort to achieve their goals.
